How to Resign from a Political Party in Kenya

How to Resign from a Political Party in Kenya

A Kenyan citizen can only be a member of one political party at a time. The custodian of political membership data in Kenya is the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP). The ORPP stores the membership data of all political parties and provides ways for individuals to resign from one party and join another.

There are two methods to check your membership status and resign from political parties:

1. Using USSD Code *509

The ORPP provides a USSD code, *509#, for managing membership registration and resignation.

  • Dial *509#, and you will be prompted to enter your ID number and first name.
  • Once your details are confirmed, you will receive a PIN, which will be required each time you access the USSD code.
  • Dial *509# again, enter your PIN, and select 1. Membership then 3. Resign.
  • A prompt will display the party you are currently affiliated with; select 1. Resign.
  • You are now free to join any political party.

2. Through the IPPMS Online Portal

The ORPP also offers an online portal for managing party membership.

  • Visit https://ippms.orpp.or.ke.
  • Select Register, enter your ID number and first name, then click Validate.
  • The form will automatically populate some fields; complete the remaining fields, request a verification code, and enter the code you receive on your phone.
  • Click Register to be redirected to the login page.
  • Enter your National ID number and password, then click Login to access your account.
  • Click on Membership Resignation under My Account and confirm your resignation.
  • Enter the One-Time Password (OTP) sent to your phone and submit your resignation.
  • Click on Registration Status to confirm that you are no longer a member of any party.

After resigning, you are free to join the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) either through *509#, IPPMS, or https://join.dap-kenya.co.ke.
